Budget hotels to come up in Madurai, Rameswaram

MADURAI: Budget hotels are to be established in Madurai and Rameswaram, for which tenders have been floated. Similar hotels would also be established at Palani, Tuticorin and Kodaikanal Road, M. Suyambulingam, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, said here on Friday.

He was addressing a meeting of Madurai divisional rail users' consultative committee (DRUCC). Mr. Suyambulingam said a multi-storeyed two-wheeler parking stand would be established at Madurai junction. Gauge conversion work between Tenkasi and Shencottah would be completed soon, after which the Pothigai Express would originate from Shencottah.

Hemant Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, said that the revenue of Madurai Division was Rs. 301 crore up to February and freight loadings stood at 2.2 million tonnes.

According to a Southern Railway press release, the members were informed that passenger fare repeaters would be provided at all passenger reservation system and unreserved ticketing counters.

Interactive Voice Response System facility for enquiries would be provided at Dindigul and Virudhunagar and touch screens systems at Dindigul, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin. Coach guidance system had been provided at Madurai, Dindigul and Virudhunagar and it would be extended to Tirunelveli and Turicorin, Mr. Hemant Kumar said.

Gauge conversion in the Pudukottai - Karaikudi and Manamadurai - Rameswaram sections would be completed soon, Mr. Hemant Kumar said. Gauge conversion between Madurai and Dindigul was expected to start from May and the Karaikudi - Manamadurai - Virudhunagar section would be closed from April for conversion work, he said.

K. M. Elankavi was elected the representative for Zonal Railway Users' Consultative Committee by DRUCC members.
