Bhattal named CLP leader

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday announced the selection of former Punjab Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal to be the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the State assembly and the resignation of its State unit chief, Shamsher Singh Dullo.

Ms. Bhattal, who was the first woman to hold the post in the State in 1996-97, replaces Captain Amarinder Singh, under whose leadership the party failed to retain power in the February 2007 elections. Party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said here that Ms. Bhattal was selected by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in pursuance of the unanimous resolution of the Congress legislature party authorising her to do so.

He said Mr. Dullo submitted his resignation to the party president owning moral responsibility for the defeat. . Mr. Dullo too had contested but was unsuccessful.
