Rajasthan to probe release of funds

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government will shortly conduct a probe to fix responsibility for release of funds for the second phase of a project for development of the Saharia tribe without verifying the completion of works in the previous stage, in which some of the newly- installed tube-wells did not function properly.

Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria, announcing this during question hour in the Assembly on Monday, said strict action would be taken against those found guilty. The Central Government had sanctioned Rs. 52 lakh for installing 38 tube-wells in Saharia-dominated Kishanganj tehsil of Baran district as part of the project.

Mr. Kataria said 31 of the hand-pumps were verified as properly functioning, but the second instalment for other hand-pumps was released apparently without verifying the completion of works. He assured the House that if it was proved that the engineers concerned did not verify the works, action would be taken against them.

The Minister pointed out that a committee headed by the District Collector was authorised to release funds to another committee of self-help groups under the Saharia Development Project. He said the allegation about the 31 hand-pumps verified by the committee also not working would be looked into.
