INLD stages walk-out in Haryana Assembly

CHANDIGARH: Indian National Lok Dal members led by former Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala staged a walk-out in the Haryana Assembly on Monday during a discussion on a call-attention motion about damage to crops due to rain. The walk-out came after the Speaker did not allow them more time to speak on the issue.

The INLD members were also demanding that the Government increase the amount of compensation paid to the farmers. The motion was moved by INLD legislators Sushil Indora, Ishwar Singh Palaka and Sahida Khan.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, meanwhile, told the House that the Government would disburse over Rs. 75 crore to farmers whose crops had been damaged due to heavy rain and hailstorms in February. The compensation would be paid to the affected farmers in April itself, he added.

Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav said that crops had been damaged over an area of 1,700 acres in 15 villages of Sirsa district due to huge quantities of water coming into the Ghaggar river. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala said the Government had enhanced the amount of compensation substantially to mitigate the sufferings of farmers.

Later, initiating the debate on a motion of thanks to the Governor for his address to the House, Congress MLA Karan Singh Dalal launched a scathing attack on Mr. Chautala which had the INLD members disrupting the proceedings time and again as they demanded that "unparliamentary'' language used by Mr. Dalal be expunged. However, the Speaker advised them to sit as Mr. Dalal was only making comparisons between the performance of Hooda and his predecessor.
