KOCHI: After the jaundice outbreak had come down, viral fever is spreading in Ernakulam district. Every day, the District Medical Officer (DMO) is getting reports of nearly 450 viral cases on some days, the number touches 500. There is no particular area from where more cases are reported, according to information from the DMO's office. The district authorities are monitoring the cases closely. They have gone for inspection at Kothamangalam, where more fever cases were found. However, the team has found that the spurt in fever there was due to typhoid. The number of cases is on the decline. In private hospitals, the number of viral-fever cases average 50 a day. The fever is characterised by high temperature and exhaustion. In some cases, it is accompanied by respiratory tract infection. Not just the changing weather but pollution also is responsible for the respiratory infection, M. Venugopal, paediatrician, says. A number of chickenpox cases are also being reported, he adds.
