`Steps on to expedite land acquisition for road work'

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has initiated steps to expedite land acquisition for developing roads under the capital city region development project, Minister for Public Works T.U. Kuruvilla has said.

Replying to a submission by V. Sivankutty on the impasse in the road development project in the capital on Monday Mr. Kuruvilla said, as per the decisions of the Cabinet sub-committee on capital region development and the Kerala Road Fund Board, the contractors were asked to continue the work. A committee, under the Chief Secretary, was also constituted to submit proposals for implementing the project. As per the proposals, the contractors were summoned for negotiations, he added.

There was considerable progress in land acquisition in the past two months. If the Government provided more Revenue staff and funds, the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (Trida) would be able complete the acquisition by this month, the Minister said.

A coordination committee comprising elected representatives and district officials of the Kerala State Electricity Board, the Kerala Water Authority, the BSNL, the PWD, Social Forestry, Revenue, Trida and the city corporation should be formed to rehabilitate the displaced and acquiring land from places of worship, he said.
