This Day That Age
The Congress has been returned to power in Madras, Mysore and Uttar Pradesh. Also it has become obvious that the party will not have an absolute majority in the Kerala State Assembly. It was the Madurai Central constituency which returned the 103rd Congress member on March 13 to give the party an absolute majority in the 205-member Madras Assembly. Earlier in the day the party annexed three more seats in Mysore to raise its total to 105 in the 208-member Assembly. In Kerala, the failure of the Congress to win an absolute majority became certain with the announcement of the last results for the day. With only 29 seats to be filled, the party has so far secured only 35 seats. Sixty-four seats are required for an overall majority in the Assembly. The Communist Party is trailing with 45 seats, thus needing 19 more for an absolute majority. Besides claiming the Thiruvalla seat, the party counts on the support of four Independents who have won with its backing. It has 23 more candidates in the constituencies, the results for which are yet to be declared.
