This Day That Age
The unified National Calendar, based on the Saka era, comes into force from March 22, 1957. The Gregorian Calendar will, however, continue to be used as hitherto, in conjunction with the new calendar, for official purposes. In the new calendar, Chaitra would be the first month and the normal year would consist of 365 days, with 366 days for every leap year. The Saka era has been adopted for the new calendar as it was found to be widely used all over India. Indian astronomers have been known to be using it in their calculations since the time of the celebrated astronomer Varahamihira. The Indian almanac-makers, even now, use the Saka era for calculations and then convert the calculations to their own system.
