Film feast at college

Few heroines in English literature have moved a reader as much Tess of the d'Urbervilles has. Natassja Kinsky brought life to Thomas Hardy's unforgettable "pure woman" in master director Roman Polanski's 1979 film Tess.

It is one of the six films based on great British novels to be screened at St. Joseph's College, Devagiri, by the college's film club on March 18 and 19. Tess is not the only Polanski film, featured in the package; there is also Oliver Twist, the Ben Kingsley-starrer made in 2005, based on Charles Dickens's immortal work. Wuthering Heights (1970, directed by Robert Feust), Tom Jones (1963, Tony Richardson), Gulliver's Travels (1996, Charles Sturridge) and To the Lighthouse (1983, Colin Gregg) will also be shown at the festival, meant mainly for college students. "But genuine film buffs could come to watch these films," says Salil Varma, club coordinator.
