Bar Council opposes entry of foreign firms

Legal Correspondent

New Delhi: The Bar Council of India on Tuesday made it clear that neither foreign lawyers nor foreign law firms would be allowed to enter the Indian legal arena.

Addressing a press conference here, Chairman Jaganath Patnaik reiterated the BCI's earlier resolution, which said, "The Council reiterates its view on the issue of foreign lawyers and law firms in the country. The BCI once again strongly opposes the entry of foreign lawyers and law firms."

Referring to news reports on the purported statement made by Adish C. Aggarwala, Chairman of All India Bar Association in London, he clarified that the BCI was the only statutory authority governing and regulating the legal profession and legal education in the country and no other organisation was entitled to make any statement affecting legal profession and legal education.

Cooperation deal

On the cooperation agreement between the Law Society of England and the Society of Indian Law Firms and the Bar Association of India, Mr. Patnaik said: "It is an agreement between agencies and they had no right to enter into agreements s on behalf of the legal profession.''
