HYDERABAD: Amid an uproar by the Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly over the selection of the site for the Machilipatnam port on Tuesday, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy left the choice for the project site to the all-party committee. The issue was raised during Question Hour by D. Umamaheswara Rao (Telugu Desam) and snowballed into a major debate with members, cutting across party lines, demanding that the port be located at Gilkaladindi near Machilipatnam instead of Gogileru, 33 km away near Bhimavaram in West Godavari district. They wanted the Government to respect popular sentiments by opting for Gilkaladindi.
