Thanjavur : K. Kanimozhi, a member of a high-level research committee on Tamil as a classical language, has made a plea for implementing 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament.

Speaking at the International Women's Day celebration at Tamil University here, Ms. Kanimozhi regretted that 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament could not be achieved for the past 15 years.

"At present, there is only eight per cent representation for women in Parliament.

The remaining 92 per cent is for men. In fact, women should ask for 50 per cent reservation. But we have not asked for it. Sacrificing our rights, we accept 33 per cent. But this has also not come into effect," she said.

She appealed to women to come out of the `social security' ring around them and fight for their own rights. In the garb of concern, love and security, women were suppressed by men.

She released the third volume of a book "Panmuga Nokkil Mahalir."

C. Subramaniam, Vice-Chancellor, received the first copy.

T. Ravikumar, MLA, said that women should be made archakas in temples.

S. Parimala, Head, Department of Archaeological Science, welcomed the gathering. G. Bhaskaran, Registrar, Tamil University, also spoke. R. Madhavi of Music Department proposed a vote of thanks.
