MADURAI: The Indian Council of Medical Research is taking up a multi-centre research on alcohol and tobacco addiction to incorporate intervention methods into the country's public health system. "We propose to start this vital initiative soon, and a survey will be undertaken by us to arrive at an effective intervention model," said A. S. Kundu, Deputy Director General of ICMR and Chief of Social and Behavioural Research. Speaking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, he said an extensive investigation would be carried out at various places, including New Delhi and Bangalore, in association with a few government medical institutions. K. K. Ganguly, Assistant Director General of ICMR, said the project was aimed at `hardcore addicts' who moved to detoxification centres. "Our idea is to evolve a module at the community level itself and incorporate it in the health system before a drinker actually becomes an addict."
