Nigade and Shergill cause a stir

NOIDA: Sachin Nigade and Gurki Shergill caused upsets on the opening day in the first round of the SRF all-India professional golf Match Play championship here on Tuesday.

Nigade scored his big win defeating Uttam Singh Mundy on the second play-off hole, in the Rs. 20 lakh event on the Professional Golfer's Tour of India (PGTI). Mundy missed putts at crucial moments.

Vivek Bhandari looked set to return to form with a one up victory against Vijay Kumar. "It was a tight match and went down to the last hole," Bhandari said.

Other seeded players, Mukesh Kumar, Ashok Kumar and Digvijay Singh registered emphatic wins. Ashok and Mukesh won on the 13th hole while Digvijay defeated Raghav Wahi on the 16th hole.

Important results (first round): Ashok Kumar bt Jaideep Patwardhan 6 and 5, Gurki Shergill bt Ali Sher 3 and 2, Digvijay Singh bt Raghav Wahi 3 and 2, Mukesh Kumar bt Chirag Kumar 6 and 5, Arjun Singh bt Deepinder Khullar 6 and 5, Amritinder Singh bt Gaurav P. Singh 3 and 2, Sachin Nigade bt Uttam Singh Mundy on 20th hole, Vivek Bhandari bt Vijay Kumar 1 up.
