NEW DELHI:
Shipping Minister T.R. Baalu on Tuesday introduced in the Lok Sabha the Indian Maritime University Bill, 2007. It seeks to establish and incorporate a teaching and affiliating university at the national level to facilitate and promote studies and research with focus on emerging areas including marine science and technology and marine environment.
The proposed university in Chennai will have campuses in Mumbai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and such other places within its jurisdiction as are deemed fit. As there were a sizable number of private institutions imparting maritime education and training all over the country, there was need to standardise the quality of education and training through affiliations and academic supervision by a central university, Mr. Baalu said.
The present maritime training set-up was not uniform and was required to be upgraded. The proposal to set up the central university was based on the recommendation of the Committee on Maritime Education and Training.
