The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the International Bench and Bar Association (IBBA) have condemned the sacking of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, by President Pervez Musharraf during the pendency of certain charges against him.
A resolution passed by the SCBA at its emergent executive meeting said: "The SCBA is dismayed and anguished at the treatment given to the Chief Justice of Pakistan in making him dysfunctional and, as reported, putting him under house arrest and condemns the humiliation meted out to him. We strongly condemn the atrocities of the police and security forces and use of force by them against the lawyers of Pakistan who were holding a peaceful agitation in this connection."
Rule of law
The SCBA conveyed its solidarity with the legal fraternity of Pakistan in their struggle to restore the rule of law and ensure independence of the judiciary and requested all the democratic forces in the world to intervene in this crisis and see that the rule of law was restored soon in that country.
In its statement, the IBBA comprising Chief Justices and judges of more than 50 countries felt that judges should not be punished for their judicial actions. It said: "Although the President has all powers to inquire into the allegations contained in the complaints alleged to have been made against him, sacking him in the interregnum would raise serious doubts over the bona fides of the constitutional reference."
