Puducherry: Health Minister E. Valsaraj has said that the healthcare delivery system in the Union Territory is improving fast with the administration being keen to provide full-fledged infrastructure in all urban, semi-urban and rural areas to provide better health care services. Inaugurating a one-day health awareness workshop for the Oulgaret Municipality councillors organised by the State Health Mission (a unit of National Rural Health Mission) at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and PG Studies Centre here on Tuesday, Mr. Valsaraj said that the there had been so many hospitals that no one need to travel more than 2 km for treatment. Primary Health Centres had been set up at the rate of one centre for every 8,000 people. Community Health Centres were also available. The General Hospital here had been attracting over 5,000 patients a day. New and latest equipments would be installed particularly in the Department of Cardiology, he added. He called upon the elected representatives in the municipal bodies to ensure that they acted as a bridge between the people and health authorities. Chairman of the Oulgaret Municipality N.S.J. Jayapal, local legislator R. Viswanathan, Secretary to Health T.M. Balakrishnan, Director of Health Services Dilip Kumar Baliga and Project Director of the State Health Mission Thamma Rao also spoke.
