Bangalore: Following protests by government doctors, nurses and other staff against granting autonomy to Bangalore Medical College, Mysore Medical College and the Government Dental College, the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has asked the State Government to put on hold its decision to grant autonomous status to these colleges. In a letter of March 13 to Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya, Mr. Chaturvedi has said that pending fuller examination, the decision "may better be kept in suspended animation." Doctors, nurses and paramedical staff working in government hospitals throughout the State have come together under the banner of Karnataka State Health and Family Welfare Services and Medical Education Employees' Central Association and have been urging the Government to defer its decision to grant autonomy to these colleges for a couple of months. Mr. Chaturvedi said: "I have received a representation from the Karnataka State Health and Family Welfare Services and Medical Education Employees' Central Association regarding grant of autonomous status to Bangalore Medical College, Mysore Medical College and Government Dental College with its nine attached hospitals." He said as Chancellor of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences he was concerned about the issues raised and sought a factual position report in the matter.
