UP IN ARMS: Tribals taking out a rally in Bhadrachalam town in response to the call given by the Girijana sangham seeking pattas for the podu lands.
KHAMMAM: Tribals, led by the AP Girijana Sangham and the CPI(M), staged a protest in front of the ITDA office in Bhadrachalam on Tuesday. People in large numbers from the sub-plan area took part in the protest which was organised in response to the state-wide call given by the Girijana Sangham to press the demand for issue of pattas for the podu lands in the enjoyment of tribal communities. They also demanded among other things remunerative price for minor forest produce and strict implementation of the scheduled area regulation 1/70. The Girijana Sangham strongly opposed implementation of Polavaram project and threatened to intensify the agitation to stop the displacement of the primitive tribal groups living in the area. A delegation of the Girijana Sangham leaders, led by its district president Sunnam Babu Rao and secretary Gundu Sharat, submitted a memorandum to ITDA authorities on the tribal issues and asked the government to respond positively. Heavy police bandobust marked the tribal protest.
