HYDERABAD: The State Government will shortly take up an inventory of all 66,000 minor irrigation tanks to stabilise the ayacut in the next five years. The inventory includes identification of the tanks, their status and inquiry about any encroachments, besides the present ayacut. Minor Irrigation Minister S. Vijayarama Raju told a press meet here on Tuesday that repairs to the tanks would be taken up in a phased manner. The Government had prepared a Rs.2,015-crore plan in 2004 to create an irrigation potential of 4.45 lakh acres and stabilisation of another 12 lakh acres. So far 2.25 lakh acres of new ayacut and seven lakh acres had been restored. The remaining work would be completed by 2009. Mr. Raju said funding of Rs. 2,800 crores had been tied up with the World Bank, Japan Bank for International Cooperation, NABARD and Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme. This apart, the Prime Minister's package for MI for Rs.1,331crores for three years in the farmer suicide-prone 16 districts has been sanctioned.
