Writes to CEC; similar system in force in Rajya Sabha

HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K. Chandrasekhar Rao has written to Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalswami seeking the issue of a whip by political parties in the voting for the Council elections from the MLAs quota on March 22.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said that the Election Commission should not have any problem in issuing such an order as there was a similar system in force in the Rajya Sabha. As the Council too was an Upper House, it would only be appropriate to adopt the same procedure here.

Merits of system

Such a system was essential to prevent horse-trading and other unhealthy practices, he said expressing concern over reports that contenders were allegedly offering as much as a crore of rupees apart from property to woo voters. Mr. Rao recalled that it was only to prevent unhealthy practices that amendments were made to the Representation of Peoples' Act, 1951. This was followed by similar laws in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
