A tuneful protest

BANGALORE: It was a demonstration with a difference, with members of the Karnataka Rajya Savitha Samaja playing the melodious mangala vadhya to protest against what the samaja described as injustice done to Karnataka in the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

The members of the samaja played the mangala vadhya and the nadaswara at Yeshwantpur Circle here on Tuesday.

Congress legislators N.L. Narendra Babu, Dinesh Gundu Rao and L. Hanumanthaiah and samaja honorary president S. Samath Kumar participated in the protest. — Special Correspondent

Teenaged girl

raped, killed

HUBLI: A teenaged girl was allegedly raped and strangled to death at Londa in Khanapur taluk of Belgaum district on Sunday night. The police said her body was dumped in a parked lorry.

The 16-year-old victim was the daughter of a railway canteen employee.

The girl is thought to have been kidnapped from her residence when she was alone. The Khanapur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Report on assault submitted

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Human Rights Council (KSHRC) has urged the State Government to initiate action against some advocates in Hassan who allegedly assaulted a woman on February 21.

The KSHRC, which submitted a report relating to the assault to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on March 5, has also urged NHRC acting chairman Shivaraj V. Patil to ensure that the guilty are punished, KSHRC president S.K. Vivekananda told presspersons here on Tuesday. — Staff Reporter

Birth anniversary

to be observed

BANGALORE: The State Committee of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will celebrate the 73rd birth anniversary of the party's founder, the late Kanshiram, on March 15 at Jasma Bhavan here.

State BSP general secretary Jigani Shankar told presspersons here on Tuesday that the party's national general secretary Veer Singh would inaugurate the programme. — Staff Reporter

`Complete kalamandira at Gubbi'

TUMKUR: S.R. Srinivas Vasu, Janata Dal Secular MLA for Gubbi in Tumkur district, has urged the Government to accord high priority to completing the construction of the Gubbi Veeranna Kalamandira at Gubbi.

Presiding over the inauguration of `Nammoora Chitrotsava' at Gubbi on Tuesday, Mr. Vasu said, "While kalamandiras have been built in Tumkur and Bangalore in memory Gubbi Veeranna, the one planned in his hometown is still incomplete."

The chitrotsava will be on till Saturday. — Staff Correspondent

`Inculcate work culture in youth'

TUMKUR: Twelfth Century social workers defined the dignity of labour, Shivamurthy Murugharajendra Sharanaru of Sri Brihanmath, Chitradurga, has said.

He inaugurated the 89th `Saptahika Mangala Sahitya Sanje' programme organised by Akhila Bharata Sharana Sahitya Parishat here on Tuesday. "We must strive to inculcate work culture among our youth," he said.

H.V. Veerabhadraiah, writer, spoke. D.N. Yogeesh, professor, Siddaganga College, presided over the function. The swamiji felicitated Sharananda, who is responsible for organising literary programmes on Tuesdays. — Staff Correspondent
