Bangalore: Sex workers of Bangalore Rural district will hold a rally and a public meeting on Wednesday in Doddaballapur in protest against criminalisation of sex work. The rally will be the first big mobilisation of sex workers in a taluk headquarters in the State. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Geetha, one of the activists, demanded that sex work be recognised as a profession and the workers be given rights. Manohar, director of Suraksha, an NGO working on AIDS and women's health, said most sex workers came from poor and Dalit sections of society, which were deprived of educational and employment opportunities. The Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act (ITPA), 1956 was flawed because it blurred the distinction between trafficking and sex work. Misconceptions about sex workers, coupled with criminalisation of their work by law and harassment by law-enforcing authorities, had resulted in sex workers becoming extremely vulnerable, he said.
