Bidar: Karnataka may soon become the second State to have private veterinary colleges. Rajasthan was the first State to allow private veterinary colleges. The Karnataka Veterinary, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Sciences University has started the process of allowing private players set up colleges. Five educational institutions have responded to the university's call. Karnataka Lingayat Education Society, Jagadguru Sutturu Shivaratrishwara Education Society, Alva's Education Trust of Moodbidri, and two private institutions from Sindagi and Koppal have obtained applications from the university. "We may be getting more requests," said Vice-Chancellor R.N. Srinivas Gowda. The University will now scrutinise the applications and send an affiliation inquiry committee to each of these institutions. If the committee recommends grant of affiliation, the institutions will be allowed to start the first-year course. After that they have to seek permission from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI). If the council refuses sanction, the college will have to be closed down, Registrar Suresh Honnappagol told The Hindu . University officials are sceptical about all the five colleges getting VCI permission. Setting up a private veterinary college is as difficult as starting a medical college, the officials said. The cost involved is at least Rs. 80 crore.
