Firms plan 110 projects in district

  • The projects planned will require 285 acres of land
  • Two special economic zones to be set up in Raichur district

BANGALORE: Private companies are likely to invest Rs. 897 crore in 110 projects in Belgaum district.

Disclosing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, Minister for Major Industries Katta Subramanya Naidu said the Government was promoting investment in tier II and tier III cities to reduce regional disparities in industrial development. The projects in Belgaum would require 285 acres. The Industries Department organised an investors' meet in Belgaum a couple of days ago.

    Proposals received

The Government had already received proposals to invest Rs. 205 crore in the sugar industry, Rs. 147 crore in tourism, hotels and hospitals, Rs. 93 crore in textiles and metal industries, Rs. 35 crore in pharmaceuticals, Rs. 32 crore in the farm sector, Rs. 10 crore in minerals, Rs. 6 crore in information technology and Rs. 2 crore in food processing, he said.

Mr. Naidu said the department planned to set up a steel park at Kustagi in Koppal district. About 2,000 acres would be required for the park. About 1,500 acres of government land would be used to set up two special economic zones in Raichur district. The Centre's permission would be sought to set up a pharmaceutical SEZ and an apparel SEZ in Raichur, he said.

The Minister said the Suvarna Kayaka Udyoga Shikshana scheme of the department had been organised in Belgaum and Raichur, and about 12,000 candidates appeared for the written test and interview. Private companies would absorb about 25 per cent of candidates who appeared for the test, he said.

Earlier, Mr. Naidu released a diary brought out by the Industries and Commerce Department Employees' Association.
