Physical test for SI recruitment

CHENNAI: Certificate verification, physical measurement, endurance and physical efficiency tests for recruitment of sub-inspectors of police (men and women) 2006 will be held from March 30 to April 11.

The selection of 682 SIs (571 men and 111 women), which was postponed due to rains, will now be conducted at Chennai, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Vellore, Salem, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Madurai, Dindigul , Ramanathapuram and Tirunelveli. Individual call letters specifying the venue, date and time would be despatched to the eligible candidates by the chairmen of the sub-committees of respective centres. Candidates should follow the instructions in the call letter, according to a release from the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board. — Special Correspondent

AIADMK grant for kin of dead fisherman

CHENNAI: All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa has sanctioned Rs. 25,000 on behalf of the party to the kin of Christopher, a fisherman belonging to Nagapattinam, who was killed in firing by Sri Lankan Navy on March 10. Two other injured fishermen — Vilver and Dhasan — who were undergoing treatment at Ramanathapuram hospital, were given Rs. 5,000 each towards their medical expenses. The amount was handed over to the affected families on Tuesday by party MLA D.Jayakumar and former Minister Jennifer Chandran. — Special Correspondent

Duration of special trains extended

CHENNAI: Southern Railway has extended the duration of the following special trains to clear the extra rush of passengers.

Train no 0683 Chennai Central-Bangalore (weekly) special, leaving Chennai on all Saturdays is extended up to March 31 and in the return direction train no 0684 leaving Bangalore on all Fridays will run till March 30, according to a railway release. — Special Correspondent

PMK criticises

West Bengal MPs

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi on Tuesday described as an insult to parliamentary democracy the scuffle involving Members of Parliament from West Bengal and the Union Minister for Shipping T.R. Baalu in Lok Sabha. In a statement, S. Ramadoss, PMK founder, said that while the MPs from West Bengal had every right to demand the establishment of a university in their State, they had no right to say that the proposed Maritime University, for which the Union Minister tabled the Bill, should not be set up in Chennai. The University should be established in the city, for which all the parties in Tamil Nadu should remained united. — Special Correspondent

Children faint after eating noon meal

SALEM: Nine children, who fainted after eating meal in the anganwadi centre in Chinnamma Naickanpalayam near Vazhapadi, were admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital here on Tuesday. Sources said the children vomited after taking the meal and fainted. They were given first aid at the Vazhapadi government hospital and referred to Salem hospital. — Staff Reporter
