CHENNAI: An Economic Offences Court here has directed actor-politician Vijayashanthi to appear in court on April 19 in connection with three cases registered by the Income-Tax Department for wilful and delayed filing of tax returns. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate and Economic Offences judge-I, J.V. Raj, issued the summons on Tuesday, after taking cognisance of three complaints presented by Senior Special Public Prosecutor for I-T Cases, K. Ramasamy. In his complaints, Albert Manohar, Assistant Commissioner of Income-Tax, Media Circle-II here, stated that Ms. Vijayashanthi delayed filing her returns from 12 months to 24 months after the statutory due date for the assessment years 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95. She had wilfully and deliberately contravened the provisions of the Income-Tax Act, he said, adding that the actor did not file the returns even after her house was searched in July 1993. When notices, reminders and show-cause notices were issue, she neither responded to them nor filed her returns.
