KOZHIKODE: All arrangements are in place for the smooth conduct of the SSLC Examination in the district. As many as 48,879 students (girls 25,702, boys 23,177) will take the examination at 189 examination centres. Deputy Director of Education J. Jaya, who participated in a video-conference on Tuesday convened by Education Minister M.A. Baby to review arrangements, said the first consignment of question papers was despatched to the centres on March 8 and 9 and the second consignment will be sent on March 16. "We have contacted the City Police Commissioner and the Rural Superintendent of Police and police patrol will be provided round-the-clock. Special assistance will be given in sensitive areas, if needed." Two night watchers were being provided at all centres and women personnel had been exempted from this duty. One key superintendent was being provided to each centre. In addition, 205 deputy chief superintendents and 3,363 assistant superintendents were being posted for the smooth conduct of the examination, Ms. Jaya added. As many as 15,455 students (boys 5,898, girls 9,557) would write examinations at 60 centres in the Kozhikode Educational District (Government 27, aided 26 and unaided 7); 17,175 students (boys 8,848, girls 8,327) at 59 centres (Government 20, aided 33, unaided 7) in the Vadakara Educational District; and 16,249 students (boys 8,431 and girls 7,818) at 63 centres (Government 20, aided 40, unaided 3) in the Tamarassey Education District. The maximum number of 856 students would be from Perambra Higher Secondary School and the lowest 20 from Fisheries High School, Puthiyappa. In view of the fear and anxiety students suffer during the examination, various centres have geared up to provide counselling services. The Nehru Yuva Kendra is providing free counselling to students. NYK sources said direct counselling was being provided at its office here besides at ten select grama panchayat centres. The Thanal centre fis providing direct and telephonic counselling to parents and children. The contact number is 0495-2725555. Amrit Kumar, a Thanal volunteer, said compared to previous years the number of calls from students and parents had come down after the introduction of the grading system in the SSLC exam. "The number of calls has come down and the callers sound less anxious. We ask parents not to put undue pressure on their wards," he adds. "We will be giving direct counselling till March 30 from 4 p.m. Telephonic counselling is available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 0495-2375421," says P.M. Mathew, director, Manusha School of Social Research and Human Resource Development.
