GULBARGA: People in the city are likely to face severe water shortage during the next three months of summer. This is despite the city having two sources of drinking water, the Bhima and Bennethora rivers, which have an abundant store of water that could last another six months even if there is not a single drop of rain. However, owing to the lack of planning by the city municipal authorities to use the available resources judiciously, the nearly five lakh residents of the City are being provided water once in four days, and in the coming days to come the situation is likely to worsen. The failure of the authorities to complete the desilting work taken up at the Sharanabasaveshwar Tank even after more than a year has led to a fall in the groundwater levels, causing the many private borewells in the city to dry up. Many households had been depending upon these borewells as a primary source of water to get them through the summer months.
