Violation of labour laws alleged

KOCHI: Violation of labour laws was taking place in the State on a large scale, Hind Mazdoor Sabha president Thampan Thomas said on Tuesday. He was speaking at a press conference here. In many industrial units, employees were being replaced by contract workers and paid lower than minimum wages, he said. A mafia was involved in arranging cheap contract labour. The workers engaged for 12 to 15 hours per day were paid daily wages of Rs.60-100, he said. Some Government establishments too had adopted this mode of employment, he alleged. The Government was making efforts to replace workers engaged in the mid-day meal scheme in schools for more than 20 years, he said. — Staff Reporter

Cath lab approved

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government has cleared the setting up of a Cath Lab at a cost of Rs.2.75 crore at the Cardiology Department of the Kottayam Medical College. It follows complaints made to Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy by the members of the public and the hospital staff during her visit to the hospital some time ago. — Special Correspondent

KUWJ demand

KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) has demanded that the Government come out with all details it has regarding `a media syndicate' by keeping the interests of media workers and the country in mind. A statement by the Chief Minister that the Government was unable to give details of `a media syndicate' working in the State with international connections was an attempt to put media persons under a cloud of suspicion,
