Beneficiaries under NREGP stand to gain

  • Over 13 lakh persons provided jobs under the programme

BHUBANESWAR : The Orissa Government has decided to pay daily wages to beneficiaries under National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) through post offices and banks.

The NREGP, which is currently implemented in 19 of 30 districts of the state, would also be extended to five new districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Bargarh and Angul in 2007-2008 financial year.

A high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the state secretariat on Tuesday decided to open accounts in name of all beneficiaries in banks and post offices soon.

As per a statement released by the Chief Minister's office, job cards had been provided to 25,38,000 families under this Centre-sponsored programme. Of this, 13,08,000 persons had been provided with jobs, which was 62 per cent of the target set for the State.

It claimed that Orissa had been ranked fourth among all states of the country in terms of the success rate in implementing the programme.
