BHUBANESWAR: The ruling Biju Janata Dal managed to have its men heading the Zilla Parishads is as many as 15 districts of the 30 districts in the State as elections for the Zilla Parishad were announced on Tuesday. Women candidates were elected chairman of the Zilla Parishads in as many as 13 districts. While seven of them belonged to the BJD, four belonged to the Congress and one each to the Bharatiya Janata Party and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. The Opposition Congress finished second by having its candidates as Chairman in 11 Zilla Parishads. The Bharatiya Janata Party, BJD's partner in the two-party coalition Government, occupied the Zilla Parishad chairman posts in two districts - Bargarh and Deogarh. The 15 districts where the BJD had its leaders occupying the post of Zilla Parishad chairman are Bhadrak, Bolangir, Boudh, Cuttack, Ganjam, Jajpur, Kandhamal, Kendrapara, Khurda, Koraput, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Puri, Rayagada and Subarnapur. The 11 districts where Congress candidates managed to win are Angul, Balasore, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Malkangiri, Nawrangpur, Sambalpur and Sundargarh.
JMM bags Mayurbhanj
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha won the Zilla Parishad Chairman post in Mayurbhanj district with the support from the Congress. The party helped the Congress in winning the Zilla Parishad chairman post in Sundargarh. Sarat Chandra Naik, an independent candidate, managed to win the Zilla Parishad Chairman post in Kalahandi district. An interesting battle for the top post in the Zilla Parishad election in Angul district saw the Congress emerging victorious. The party managed to win the vote of a Zilla Parishad member belonging to the Samjawadi party to gain a majority. The Congress and the ruling BJD had won same number of Zilla Parishad seats in the district.
