BHOPAL: Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan is of the opinion that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Madhya Pradesh lost the recent Sidhi Lok Sabha by-election because of the Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP). The BJP candidate, Kunwar Singh, lost to the Congress party's Manik Singh by a narrow margin of 1,586 votes in Sidhi due to inroads made by the GGP in the constituency, particularly the tribal reserved Assembly segments of Dhauni and Deosar, the Chief Minister said. Talking to newspersons, Mr. Chauhan said the GGP candidate polled more than 71,000 votes in Sidhi and this tilted the scale against the BJP candidate. He said the party would now be engaged in analysing the election results. "At times the election outcome comes as an eye-opener," he added. The BJP had been confident of winning all three by-elections from Gwalior, Sidhi (Parliamentary) and Udaipura (Assembly), he said, adding: "we however lost in Sidhi by a narrow margin." When his attention was drawn to the Gwalior by-election and the BJP's failure to impress a majority of the voters in the Bhander and Dabra Assembly constituencies, he said the BJP had lost to the Congress by 35,000 votes in the last election whereas this time it had captured it by the same margin.
