Lightning claims 28 lives in U.P.

LUCKNOW: At least 28 people were killed and over two dozen sustained burn injuries due to lightning in various parts of Uttar Pradesh, official sources said on Tuesday. Four persons each were killed in Varanasi and Ballia, three in Basti and two each in Mirzapur, Mau, Balrampur, Mahrajganj, Sonebhadra, Ghazipur and Mainpuri on Monday, they said adding one each were killed in Gonda, Faizabad and Gorakhpur districts. In Varanasi, a power sub-station in Daulatpur locality was damaged due to thunderstorm disrupting power supply to various localities, they said.

Meanwhile, heavy showers accompanied by hailstorm lashed several parts of the State Capital damaging standing crops of wheat, pea and oilseeds. The damages caused to the farmers' crops were being assessed in order to provide them assistance, they added. Road traffic was also disrupted in some areas due to uprooting of trees, they said.- PTI
