Target BJP, Yechury to CPI

Special Correspondent

Against misrule of Samajwadi Party, he says

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) disagrees with the twin objective of the Communist Party of India in taking on both the ruling Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh, suggesting it should rather target one rival.

"Looking at the ground realities, one should target only the maximum threat and support only those who are strongest in defeating the communal combination," party MP and Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said at a press conference.

For the CPI (M), communalism was the greatest threat that had to be fought. At the same time, it was against the misrule of the Samajwadi Party and that was why it was contesting the Uttar Pradesh polls on its own.

The CPI (M) would extend support on seats it was not contesting to a candidate of a secular party which was in a position to defeat the communal forces. There was no clash between the two Left parties.

"No clash"

"There is no clash [with the CPI list of 17 seats] with ours. We are hoping that all secular parties do this ... division in secular votes will only strengthen the communal combination.''

Though they were contesting separately, the understanding reflected the improving Left unity.

Mr. Yechury said the CPI should support the CPI (M) on seats the latter was contesting.

The CPI is contesting the elections along with the Jan Morcha, the political front formed by the former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh.
