Member threatens to stage dharna in House

Special Correspondent

  • To protest eviction of physically challenged persons
  • Elders support Kurien, call it `unacceptable'

NEW DELHI: Congress member P. J. Kurien on Tuesday threatened to stage a sit-in in the Rajya Sabha if the Railways continued to evict physically challenged persons operating phone booths in railway stations, to accommodate multinational food chains.

Cutting across party lines members supported Mr. Kurien's observations, saying they would join him in the dharna. They said this was ``unacceptable."

Mr. Kurien, who was speaking during the discussion on the Railway budget, said a large number of physically handicapped persons came to his house in the morning and complained about their eviction.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said physically challenged persons running stalls in stations would not be evicted. However, it was another matter if some of the physically challenged had illegally transferred the ownership to others. ``I will personally look into the affair,'' he said.
