MANGALORE: S.T. Ramesh, Additional-Director General of Police (Prisons), has put an end to speculation about plans to shift the district jail located at Kodialbail here to a new premise at Kudupu near here. Although N. Yogish Bhat, MLA, and B. Nagaraj Shetty, district in-charge Minister, wanted the jail to be shifted, the Prisons Department has decided to upgrade the prison under the prison modernisation scheme. "We did receive suggestion from elected representatives to shift the jail to a new location. We were assured that the Mangalore Urban Development Authority would construct a new facility at Kudupu and that the jail could be shifted there," Mr. Ramesh told presspersons during his visit to the district jail here on Tuesday. The Union Government had provided Rs. 53 crore to Karnataka under the programme for five years beginning 2002, he said. Stating that the department had entrusted the work on upgrading the facilities at the jail to the PWD and nearly Rs. 1.5 crore had been spent on it, Mr. Ramesh said this amount would go waste if the jail were to be shifted at this stage.
