CHENNAI: A high-level planning committee of the State Government, which met here on Tuesday to discuss the proposal to develop the Vandalur-Kelambakkam belt into a world-class city, looked at the possibilities of joint development with private developers. Official sources said the preliminary meeting also discussed some of the models for development. Though most part of the area earmarked falls outside the Chennai Metropolitan Area, its development is bound to affect the growth of Chennai. Hence, the Directorate of Town and Country Planning and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority are likely to propose jointly a broad plan for developing it. The plan will focus on IT-related activities, apart from promoting residential, institutional and recreational activities. The area was earlier identified for locating a satellite town and some of the layout proposals and development projects falling within this area were frozen. It appears that the Government may defreeze this area and sanction projects of a certain size and scale and allow for development. The Government proposes to facilitate the emergence of this new city to meet international standard. The committee will help the Government prepare a broad development plan to attract big investors. The development will extend till Mahabalipuram town. The key features are: the entire area will be zoned into blocks of 500 to 100 acres, provision for MRTS and other rail systems as well as a system to drain flood water into the sea.
