CHENNAI : Soft skill development courses will be part of the curriculum to make more graduates employable, said S. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras. Students coming out of their colleges with degrees lacked in soft skills, an important input to make them employable, he said addressing the convocation ceremony of SRM Arts and Science College, Kattankulathur, on Friday. He distributed degree certificates and cash awards to meritorious students. The Vice-Chancellor regretted that of the 400,000 graduates, the country produced only 25 per cent fully qualified for employment. In arts and science subjects the percentage was still lower at only 10 per cent, he said. To address this problem, University of Madras has decided to introduce soft skill development courses from the next semester at post-graduate level and at UG-level it would be put in place from the next academic year, Mr. Ramachandran said. Teachers could provide only training and guidance, but it was up to students to develop their skills. K. Subburam, college principal, said that the college had produced four gold medallists and 109 university rank-holders for 2003-06. The placement programme has also touched its high with 33 multinational companies having already picked up their personnel from the institution. T. P. Ganesan, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Engineering Technology, SRM University, R. Shivakumar, secretary, SRM Arts and Science College and N. Varadharajan, governing council member, SRM Group Institutions, participated.
