Kolkata:
Contrary to claims by a section of the leadership of the Trinamool Congress-led Krishi Jami Raksha (Save Farmland) Committee opposing the Tata Motors' project coming up at Singur in West Bengal's Hooghly district, the farmer who allegedly committed suicide at Singur early on Monday did not have his land taken away for setting up the proposed car manufacturing unit, it has been officially ascertained.
After verification it was found that the no land belonging to the farmer, Haradhan Bag, falls within the project site, the State's Director of Industries, M.V. Rao told The Hindu here on Tuesday.
"Haradhan Bag did not have land that falls within the site but owned a plot outside the project area. His two sons, however, had small plots of land [each measuring a third of a bigha] inside the site area," Mr Rao clarified. "The farmer had been reportedly ill treated by his two sons over the past few days which could have contributed to his anguish, according to his neighbours and family members," he said. The police are investigating the suspected suicide.
