THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Zoology of the University of Kerala and the Centre for Informatics, a subsidiary of the department, has bagged Rs.82 lakh from the University Grants Commission under the Special Assistance Programme. The assistance will be for five years beginning April 2007. The Department of Zoology will get Rs. 57 lakh for the next five years to engage in research work in Molecular Taxonomy and Biodiversity and in Molecular Endocrinology and Physiology. While Rs.32 lakh will be for the purchase of equipment, Rs.13 lakh will be given as recurring expenditure and the rest, as salary for two project fellows. The Centre for Bio-informatics has been given Rs.25 lakh for instituting an M.Sc programme in Computational Biology and for the appointment of a lecturer. This grant was given under the `Innovative Programmes' initiative of the UGC. The Department of Sanskrit had also submitted a proposal under this scheme to the Commission. "Zoology is the fifth department of the University of Kerala to get SAP aid. Mathematics, Politics, Economics and Geology are the other departments. This shows that coordinated efforts on the part of the University can fetch good returns. The departments and my office acted in tandem to reach the SAP proposals to the UGC within the stipulated time," University's Director, Planning and Development G. Muraleedhara Kurup told The Hindu . Such a large influx of funds could give a big boost to teaching, learning and research activities in the university for many years to come, he added. At the end of the five years, these departments will receive further funding under SAP only if they fulfil the stringent performance conditions set by the UGC. The first instalment of SAP funds for the various departments is expected to reach the University by April.
