NEW DELHI: Four persons have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police on charges of killing a jeweller after robbing him of gold ornaments worth nearly Rs. 20 lakhs at Ashram Chowk here on Sunday. The police have recovered the booty and seized two motorcycles that were allegedly used as the getaway vehicles. Vinay Kumar Jain was on his way home in his Santro car on Sunday evening when four robbers on two motorcycles intercepted him near his house. They shot at him from a close range and then fled with his bag containing the jewellery. A special team of the Crime Branch on Monday received a tip-off about some criminals from Muzaffarnagar planning to leave the Capital for Kairana in a Tata Indica car. Subsequently a team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Sanjay Bhatia intercepted the vehicle near Hanuman Mandir on Ring Road, at which the suspects opened fire.
Overpowered
However, the police managed to overpower the four and recovered two 0.30 bore pistols and a country-made firearm from their possession. The accused were identified as Mohammad Kasim, Sajid, Abdul Rehman and Sharafat. The police also recovered gold jewellery from their possession. During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in the Ashram Chowk robbery-cum-murder case. At their instance, the police recovered the motorcycles, one stolen from Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi and the other from Panipat in Haryana, used to commit the crime. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Neeraj Thakur, Kasim disclosed that his wife had once bought some jewellery from Mr. Jain's shop at Madanpur Khadar. Kasim noticed that Mr. Jain collected all the ornaments and took them along after closing the shop. He then allegedly conspired with his accomplices to target Mr. Jain. "The four have confessed to their involvement in several cases of robbery in Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana," said Mr. Thakur, adding that the accused had also committed a robbery in a copper factory at Nandnagri in North-East Delhi in March 2006.
