This Day That Age
President Sukarno on March 14 proclaimed a state of war and siege throughout Indonesia. Under this proclamation, which places Indonesia under martial law, the President as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces has virtually dictatorial powers. President Sukarno issued the proclamation following a meeting with the Prime Minister, Dr. Ali Sastroamidjojo, who handed in the Cabinet's resignation. The meeting followed a series of uprisings in the Indonesian islands and a long political crisis over a plan to include Communists in the Government for the first time.
