Partnership between Kannur and Calw universities bears fruit

Staff Reporter

Extension of historical bond between Germany,Thalassery

KANNUR: The partnership between the Kannur University and the University of Calw in Germany has started bearing fruit as three students of the Department of Management Studies of the former led by its head are currently participating in academic programmes in Germany as part of the student and faculty exchange initiatives by the two institutions.

The cooperation between the two universities has been conceived as an extension of the historical bond between the German town and Thalassery established by German missionary Hermann Gundert who contributed yeomen service to the Malayalam language during his stay at Thalassery. Students of Management Studies Krishna Prabha Kamath, Dinakar Deepak Kamath and Varun Madhusoodanan led by department head P.T. Raveendran will be in Germany till March 19 as part of their four-week assignment to do different projects with German students and visit German companies. Kannur University Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan who headed the university delegation had been in Calw for one week and participated in various functions attended by the Calw University.

Dr. Chandramohan told The Hindu on Wednesday that the visit of the delegation to the Calw University was useful. He said that he told German university officials and students at a function that the partnership between the two universities would enhance the job opportunities for the students of this region.

While the employability of students in the region was 60 per cent, that of German students was 90 per cent, he said adding that "the cooperation will also improve the outlook of our students.''

A group of students of the Calw University would visit the Kannur University for a six-month programme as part of the exchange agreement by the two universities following the visit of Dr. Chandramohan's predecessor late P.K. Rajan in Calw as part of a delegation from the State to take part in the Herman Hesse Festival in 2002. Dr. Gundert was Hesse's grandfather.

According to information from Calw, the visiting students from here participated in an International Students Congress on `Enterprise and community' organised by the host university. They presented a paper on `International cooperation of the SMEs (Small and medium sized enterprises), problems being faced by the SMEs in India and their relevance. Dr. Raveendran spoke on `Understanding India from a business perspective - opportunities and challenges.'

A report on the proceedings of the programme emailed to The Hindu said that the students of the Calw University presented papers on `Power-handling as a quality feature in corporate communications,' `Ethnical economy: push and pull factors for corporate foundations of foreign citizens in Germany' and `Demand on multicultural competence in executives'.

Prof. Claudia Ossola-Haring of the Calw University was quoted as saying that the students of both the universities worked together perfectly in the congress.
