Telugu Desam finds vote bank elusive in Kurnool

Congress candidate on firmer ground in local bodies category

  • Telugu Desam in for disappointment
  • Party fails to influence cross-voting

KURNOOL: The Telugu Desam Party, which expected some miracles during election to the Legislative Council in the local bodies category, is in for a disappointment. The TDP appears to be struggling to keep its own vote bank intact in the changed scenario.

The TDP failed to influence the voters for a cross-voting. Some of the Congress leaders were understood to have told the mediators that it was a highly risky job to override the party decision as a Backward Class leader and former IPS officer T. Srinivasulu was contesting the election on behalf of the Congress. If any leaders went against the party, they would be doing it at the risk of incurring the wrath of the BCs.

Even Kotla family, which was believed to have not been happy with the selection, has come out openly to support the candidate nominated by the party.

    Lone battle

On the other hand, TDP candidate P. Radhakrishna, former journalist, who is new to politics, is waging a lone battle.

However, he is confident of polling more votes than what the party has at present. It is rumoured that the K.E. family and Bhuma Nagi Reddy are unhappy over nomination of Mr. Radhakrishna on behalf of the party.

The Congress camp is expecting some cross-voting from the TDP side. It is to be seen whether any of the two candidates influence the voters beyond party considerations.

Out of the total electorate of 1,014, the Congress has the support of 603 votes, the TDP 328, CPI (M) 31 and CPI 19. The CPI promised support to the Congress.
