Tuticorin: The police seized 66 vehicles here on Wednesday for violating traffic rules. Cases were registered against all drivers under different Sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Superintendent of Police John Nicholson told reporters that the vehicles were seized for over-speed, carrying more passengers, drunken driving and holding luggage projected outside the body of the vehicle.

Of the total 66 vehicles seized, 51 were autorickshaws, six each were `share auto rickshaws' and school vans, two were taxi cars and one was a school bus.

Helmet drive

Mr. Nicholson said that the police would carry out a motorbike rally here on March 17 to create awareness of the benefits of wearing helmets.

"In all, 1,000 police personnel would take part in the campaign," he added.
