Bharathidasan Institute of Management to ink pact with Textiles Committee

TIRUCHI: The Centre for Contemporary Management Research of the Bharathidasan Institute of Management here will shortly enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Textiles Committee of the Union Ministry of Textiles to determine feasibility of establishing a common facility centre.

The committee has planned a fullfledged centre here with advanced machinery and equipment for several units such as warping, sizing, designing and quality analysis laboratory for the benefit of cotton-based primary cooperative weaving societies in Tiruchi district.

High quality

The study will be directed at ensuring manufacture of high quality cotton goods through these societies, according to S. Sundar, Assistant Professor, Postgraduate Programme

He said that the research centre would identify the right type of machinery to be utilised for setting up the common facility centre, adding that the study also aimed at improving the financial management of these societies. Students of the BIM had visited a few societies at Woraiyur here for evaluating their performance level.

Under its Integrated Handloom Cluster Development Programme, the Union Ministry of Textiles had identified 20 centres in the country, including Tiruchi and Kurunjipadi in Cuddalore district, and Tiruvannamalai.

Training

The Cluster Development Executive of the Committee, G. Ramesh Babu, said that the BIM's expertise in management would be utilised for imparting training in advanced skills to members of the societies. Consortia comprising master weavers were being formed in several villages in the district.

One such unit had already been formed in Manamedu near Musiri.
