"Definitive editions" of 41 Tamil texts to be published

  • The publication will begin in April this year
  • Research on ancient women poets to be encouraged

    CHENNAI: The Tamil Language Promotion Board, under the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, will release the "definitive editions" of 41 ancient Tamil texts and their translation into English before 2007-end. The publication will begin in April 2007.

    Efforts will be made to complete 50 visual episodes relating to the ancient Tamil literature, grammar, stone inscriptions and coins in the next six months. Twenty of this will be ready by April, the third meeting of the Board held in Chennai last week decided. Board Chairman and former Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University V.C. Kulandai Swamy chaired the meeting.

    Udaya Narayana Singh, Director, CIIL, Mysore, S. Mohan, Director (Finance), Union Ministry of Human Resource Development; A. Krishnamurthy, secretary, Sahitya Academy, New Delhi and Board members took part in the meeting. Mr. Kulandai Swamy said the meeting also decided to hold seminars on the following themes in collaboration with leading universities: the contribution of the Bhakti Movement and Literature to the world culture; the contribution of Tamil to Indian culture; the Indus Valley Civilization and the Indus Script; and the role of Tamil in the growth of Indian literatures.
