dated March 16, 1957: Krishna Menon elected

Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, Union Minister without portfolio, and Mr. S.K. Patil, President of the Bombay Pradesh Congress Committee, have been elected to the Lok Sabha from Bombay city. In the keenly contested North Bombay constituency, where the issue of India's foreign policy got mixed up with that of a unilingual Marathi State, Mr. Krishna Menon triumphed over his only rival, Mr. Peter Alvares (PSP, backed by the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti) by 47,741 votes. Mr. Menon polled 1,71,708 votes and Mr. Alvares secured 1,23,967.
