DESERTED LOOK: Shops and establishments remaining closed in Puducherry on Thursday when a dawn-to -dusk bandh was observed in response to the call given by the Federation of Village Panchayat Presidents.
Puducherry: The daylong bandh called by the Federation of Village Panchayat Presidents in Puducherry on Thursday evoked mixed response. All private buses and tempos went off the road causing inconvenience to the passengers especially those proceeding to places outside the Union Territory. With the buses halting at the border points, passengers had to get down a few km away from the town. Government buses, however, were plying with police security. Police pickets were posted at vulnerable points. Autorickshaws were operating as usual although the turnout of passengers was less than the normal.
Private vehicles
Private vehicles (two-wheelers and cars) were running as usual. Shops and establishments and a section of vegetable vendors in most of the areas remained closed. Office attendance was, however, normal, a source said. Merchants who had to deliver goods on Thursday supplied the commodities a day before as they feared that there would be inconvenience to them to carry on business on Thursday. The federation called for the bandh to urge the administration to sanction statutorily recognised financial and administrative powers to the civic bodies. A local court in the meanwhile, restrained the federation from holding the bandh in the wake of a petition filed by a couple of Plus-Two students on Wednesday. The Deputy convener of the federation, G.A. Jagannathan, said that he had no information about the court stay on the bandh. He said that the response to the call for bandh was overwhelming and he thanked the parties as well as organisations that stood in solidarity with the federation during the bandh.
